Notice of Mayoral Vacancy

NOTICE OF MAYORAL VACANCY

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council of the City of Laurel, Montana, is seeking Letters of Interest from qualified individuals for appointment to the office of Mayor to fill a vacancy for the term commencing June 19, 2026, and continuing through December 31, 2027. The office shall thereafter be filled by election at the City's November 2027 General Election.
Individuals submitting a Letter of Interest must meet the qualifications for the office of Mayor set forth in Montana Code Annotated § 7-4-4301, which provides:
7-4-4301. Qualifications for Mayor.
(1) A person is not eligible for the office of Mayor unless the person:
(a) is at least 21 years old;
(b) has been a resident of the state for at least 3 years; and
(c) has been a resident for at least 2 years preceding the election to office of the city or town or an area that has been annexed by the city or town.
(2) The office of Mayor of a city or town is considered vacant if the individual elected as Mayor ceases to be a resident of the city or town.
Interested and qualified individuals are invited to submit a Letter of Interest addressed to:

Letters of Interest may also be submitted electronically to bharakal@laurel.mt.gov.
All Letters of Interest must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on June 15, 2026.
The City Council will consider the submitted Letters of Interest at a Special City Council Meeting to be held on June 18, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Laurel City Hall, 115 W. 1st Street, Laurel, Montana. Individuals who submit a Letter of Interest are encouraged to attend and may be asked to participate in the appointment process.
