Brief Power Outage on 7/13/2020

The City of Laurel’s water plant experience a brief power outage on the morning of July 13, 2020.  At the time of the outage, the water plant was pumping water into Laurel.  The water pumps being unexpectedly shut off caused a water hammer in the water distribution lines.   This caused mineral deposits in the water lines to be stirred up, which resulted in cloudy water throughout the water system.  As soon as the City was informed of this issue, City crews started flushing fire hydrants throughout Laurel to clear the waterlines.  Laurel’s water is safe to drink, and no contaminants were ever introduced into the water lines.  Crews will be continuing to flush fire hydrants this week. Residents may notice water running down some streets during this process.
