HEALTH ADVISORY

 LAUREL MUNICIPAL WATER

Water System Water may be Contaminated Due to High Turbidities

Our water system recently experienced high turbidities. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

This Health Advisory is precautionary. The Laurel Municipal water treatment plant experienced higher than normal turbidities on the 14th, 17th, 18th, and the 30th of June. The system failed to notify the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, as required after the exceedances. Due to the turbidity exceedances, disinfection treatment may not have been sufficient, and the quality of water produced at that time cannot be assured.

What should I do?

  • You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
  • People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

What does this mean?

This is not an emergency. If it had been you would have been notified immediately.

What is being done?

Water treatment plant personnel are closely monitoring the situation and will notify users if the situation worsens. Standard operating procedures will be implemented to ensure the required notification happens should issues arise in the future.  More information will be posted on Laurel’s website https://cityoflaurelmontana.com/ .

For more information, please contact Kurt Markegard, Public Works Director at 406-628-4796, kmarkegard@laurel.mt.gov  or PO Box 10, Laurel, MT 59044. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
